Three Westmoreland County townships targeted first for broadband upgrade

Access to the internet is poor or lacking for more than 3,500 addresses in Westmoreland County, including 700 businesses, as county officials prepare to get the three poorest-served municipalities online.

Fairfield, Derry and Ligonier townships will get attention first in a plan to expand broadband access throughout the predominantly rural, 1,036-square-mile county, Jason Rigone, director of the office of planning and development, said Thursday at a public meeting in Ligonier. The estimated cost of wiring the three townships for the internet is $3 million, but private internet service provider companies are expected to pick up part of the expense.
