Access to the internet is poor or lacking for more than 3,500 addresses in Westmoreland County, including 700 businesses, as county officials prepare to get the three poorest-served municipalities online.
Fairfield, Derry and Ligonier townships will get attention first in a plan to expand broadband access throughout the predominantly rural, 1,036-square-mile county, Jason Rigone, director of the office of planning and development, said Thursday at a public meeting in Ligonier. The estimated cost of wiring the three townships for the internet is $3 million, but private internet service provider companies are expected to pick up part of the expense.
